What to Expect as a Candidate
Running for public office is a serious commitment, but you will not have to do it alone.
The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee works to recruit, support and elect qualified Democratic candidates who are committed to serving our community with integrity, accountability and transparency.
If you are considering running for office in Cheektowaga, here is what you can expect from the process.
Endorsement
Candidates seeking the Democratic endorsement will have an opportunity to meet with Committee members, answer questions and discuss why they are seeking office.
The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee will then consider candidates and determine which individuals it believes are best prepared to represent Democratic voters and the residents of Cheektowaga.
Receiving the Committee’s endorsement means becoming part of a larger team working together to elect strong Democratic candidates throughout the community.
Getting on the Ballot
Ballot access is one of the first major steps in any campaign.
When petitioning is required, Committee members and campaign volunteers work together to collect the necessary signatures from Democratic voters.
Candidates are expected to participate in the petition process and work alongside Committee members and volunteers to ensure petitions are completed accurately and submitted on time.
Petition requirements vary depending on the office and election cycle, and candidates will receive guidance regarding the requirements that apply to their race.
Campaign Support
Endorsed candidates can expect support from the Cheektowaga Democratic Committee throughout the campaign.
That support may include:
- Petitioning and ballot access assistance
- Campaign strategy and planning
- Messaging and communications
- Volunteer recruitment and coordination
- Voter outreach
- Fundraising guidance
- Campaign finance assistance
- Literature distribution
- Door-to-door canvassing

Building Your Campaign Team

Time Commitment

As Election Day approaches, the time commitment generally increases.
Before deciding to run, candidates should speak with their family, employer and others who may be affected by the demands of a campaign.
You should also be prepared to become familiar with the issues facing Cheektowaga and be able to clearly explain your priorities and positions to voters.
Fundraising
Campaigns require financial resources.
Candidates should expect to actively participate in fundraising by reaching out to friends, family members, professional contacts and supporters.
Fundraising may include campaign events, individual solicitations, online fundraising and other efforts permitted under New York State election law.
Campaign fundraising needs vary significantly depending on the office, the opponent, whether a primary is involved and the overall competitiveness of the race.
Candidates should be prepared to develop a realistic campaign budget and fundraising plan.
Working as a Team
Running as an endorsed Democrat means being part of a coordinated effort.
Candidates are expected to work cooperatively with fellow Democratic candidates, Committee members and volunteers.
Coordinating voter outreach, campaign materials, events and messaging can help campaigns use resources more efficiently and reach more voters.
While every candidate is responsible for their own campaign, teamwork strengthens the entire Democratic ticket.
Community Involvement
Candidates should be visible and engaged members of the community.
That means attending neighborhood events, civic meetings, community celebrations, fundraisers and other gatherings where residents come together.
Campaigning is ultimately about building relationships and listening to the people you hope to represent.
Public Scrutiny and Privacy
Becoming a candidate means entering the public eye.

Candidates should be open and honest with the Committee during the screening process about any issues that could become relevant during a campaign.
It is always better to identify and address a potential concern early than to be surprised by it later.
Candidates endorsed by the Cheektowaga Democratic Committee represent not only themselves, but also the Democratic organization and the voters who support it. We expect our candidates to conduct themselves accordingly.

The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee believes elected officials should serve with integrity, transparency and accountability and remain responsive to the residents they represent.
Those expectations begin during the candidate selection process and continue throughout the campaign and while serving in public office.
