Councilmember Stephen Nowicki Reflects on His First Months in Office

It’s been a busy and productive start to the year.

First, I want to thank all the voters who elected me to serve as a councilmember. Over the past few months, I have been working closely with the departments assigned to me, tackling a wide range of issues. Between Highway, Sewer Pump and Engineering, meetings with the TCEA, Fire/EMS, and more, I have been doing everything I can to get fully up to speed and contribute wherever possible.

One of my first major responsibilities as an elected official was attending the 2026 Association of Towns training conference. The three-day program focused on helping municipal officials serve their communities more effectively and provided opportunities to connect with representatives from municipalities facing similar challenges.

Many of the sessions directly addressed issues we are working through here in Cheektowaga, and the resources offered were genuinely valuable.

Staying connected with residents has also been a priority. Attending meetings with organizations such as the William Street Taxpayers Association, Dick Urban Community Association, Town Park Community Association, and local Community Watch groups has helped keep me informed about what residents are experiencing and what they want addressed.

Some of the feedback has been encouraging. Some of it has highlighted areas where we need to improve. All of it matters.

My goal is to make sure those voices are heard and reflected in the decisions we make as a Town Board.

Most recently, I was proud to sponsor the resolution limiting cooperation between the Cheektowaga Police Department and ICE. Seeing it pass by a 6-0 vote was a significant moment. It required collaboration and effort, but the board came together to move the measure forward.

Shortly after its passage, I submitted my application to the Cheektowaga Citizens Police Academy. Over the next 12 weeks, I will have the opportunity to gain a firsthand look at the daily work of our police officers. Several officers encouraged me to participate, and I am grateful that the opportunity has finally arrived.

While we may not always be vocal about it, this board is working hard behind the scenes to address the challenges facing our town and help Cheektowaga thrive.

I am grateful to serve alongside a diverse group of individuals who bring different perspectives to the table. With those combined viewpoints, I believe we can continue doing meaningful work for our community.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
